Castle in Olsztynek

The Teutonic Knights often built their castles using the existing strongholds of the Prussian tribes. This castle faced exacly the same lot.

Built in 1349 - 1366. Once having been finished, it hosted in its walls the great master of the Teutonic Order, Winrich von Kniprode with his entourage. The first known image of the castle is the Hartknoch's engraving from 1684. To this day, only few remains of the Middle Ages survived, but certainly the 15th century original cellars with cross-ribbed vaults and two granite stones visible on the top wall of the main building, probably supporting the so-called Gdanisko (or in other words a medieval toilet) are worth your attention.
